OK, so this crazy Japanese lady isn’t exactally folding a business shirt… but a great technique anyway.

If anyone knows how to do something similar with a business shirt, we’re keen to hear about it.  Send us an email at feedback@amalfishirts.com.au.

So what are two-ply business shirts?

‘Two-ply cotton’ refers to fabric made with two individual threads, twisted together to make one yarn and then tightly woven creating a very smooth, strong fabric. These types of fabrics often feel silkier and make a more comfortable business shirt. Almost all business shirts are made from a cheaper single-ply fabric, however all Amalfi Shirts are made of premium Italian two-ply fabrics. Often two-ply business shirts are designated as such on the label, while single-ply business shirts will probably not mention ply at all.

Back in your old school days history may have not been your thing so we thought we’d give you a little history lesson Amalfi style. Unlike school, We believe in only giving you history lessons that are relevant, short, interesting and with no tests at the end!

The French cuff or the double cuff (depending on which country you grew up in) refers to the cuff on your shirt that extends further than the length of the arm which is then folded back upon itself. A cufflink is then used to keep the cuff in place instead of your standard button. Let’s trace the origin of the Double Cuff shirt back a bit in time. Not surprisingly the French take credit for this type of shirt hence it being know in some parts as a French Cuff…Legend has it that the Count of Monte-Cristo’s Baron Danglarsfirst wore a French Cuff that seemed to have started somewhat of a fashion revolution of the design kind. Even today and after following more than a century and a half, double cuffs are found on the highest quality business shirts. Double Cuffs allow the wearer to showcase their sense of styleindividualise with their favourite cufflinks and is the reason why all Amalfi Shirts have double cuffs. With multiple holes in your Amalfi Shirt cuff you can chose to wear different sleeve lengths depending on your arm’s length.

Cufflinks, ties, shirts, suits, belts and shoes… there’s a lot to coordinate, and the potential for a lot to go wrong. Here’s our selection of top tips to help you get a right.

  • Leave the novelty cufflinks at home (eg Lego example above), along with the Daffy Duck novelty tie. The golden rule for cufflinks is they should be always be subtle and tasteful.
  • Where possible match the metal part of your cufflink to the metal colour of your belt. For example if you have a silver belt buckle, then pick silver metal cufflinks.
  • Black and silver are great combinations, alternatively try to stay with single colour palettes.
  • Choose cufflinks that contrast the colour of your business shirt and match some element of your tie.

How to match business shirts and ties

We are continually amazed that some guys just have no idea when it comes to basic fashion sense. We have collated some of our favourite tips to ensure you can keep on top of your game! Maybe treat it as more of a checklist so you can sleep easy or pat yourself on the back but the basics are all too often cast aside in the name of fashion.

A pearl of wisdom to keep in mind- simple, subtle and classic style is always a good mantra (this doesn’t date!)

Solid color business shirts provide a classic look and make it easy to match with most ties. These are not only versatile and suitable for all occasions but also timeless.

Want to set up to the plate are you ready for the bigger challenge? With the range of patterned business shirt options comes a new set of rules. Patterned business shirts can be somewhat difficult to match however here are some tips to point you in the right direction:

  • You can only have a pattern on pattern when one pattern is much bolder than the other.
  • You can wear a striped shirt with a striped tie as long as the stripes are not identical in size.
  • Make sure there’s at least one color in your tie which matches something else you’re wearing: your suit, shirt, or your belt/shoes
  • Avoid the trifecta of a striped business shirt with a striped tie and a pin-striped suit. Matching three similar patterns together is rarely going to be a winning combination.
